As it happened, there was a different, more personal issue that Baltaoğlu was also grappling with. He had an elder brother, Rizzo, who was the admiral of the Byzantine galley fleet, but they had not seen each other for years.

Rizzo was, however, on the opposite camp of the civil strife. However, Rizzo was part of the strategy that the Byzantium employed. Rizzo’s position was understood by this Grand Vizier of Mehmed, Çandarlı, as a threat, and a smart way to turn the tables on Rizzo was conceived whereby Rizzo would be successfully endeared to the Ottoman Empire and made grateful in the process.

This was the essence of ‘The Plan’ that many in the Empire tried to formulate. In the meaning of this, would there be a chance that Rizzo would help Mehmed because he appreciated the siege? And, to make matters worse, would he like the important position that Mahmoud had designed for him?

Mehmed had certainly plotted a scheme that would use not only the obvious military strength but also psychological manipulation and complex interpersonal relationships.
