Mehmed II, nicknamed ‘Mehmed the Conqueror’, was set to remove all barriers preventing him from taking hold of the Byzantine capital.
Having consolidated the support of his advisors and the populace to a single cause, it was evident to Mehmed that the moment to embark on his great offensive had arrived. Thanks to armies naval and ground, the fleet was put under the captainship of Admiral Baltaoğlu. However, there was a critical factor left—which may win or lose the siege.

Family Ties During Difficult Times, The Empire at War, however, did not only demand Baltaoğlu prepare for combat. As it happened, there was a different, more personal issue that Baltaoğlu was also grappling with. He had an elder brother, Rizzo, who was the admiral of the Byzantine galley fleet, but they had not seen each other for years.

Rizzo was, however, on the opposite camp of the civil strife. However, Rizzo was part of the strategy that the Byzantium employed. Rizzo’s position was understood by this Grand Vizier of Mehmed, Çandarlı, as a threat, and a smart way to turn the tables on Rizzo was conceived whereby Rizzo would be successfully endeared to the Ottoman Empire and made grateful in the process.
This was the essence of ‘The Plan’ that many in the Empire tried to formulate. In the meaning of this, would there be a chance that Rizzo would help Mehmed because he appreciated the siege? And, to make matters worse, would he like the important position that Mahmoud had designed for him?
The Haremi Politics and a Child Born into the Tradition
As more resources were directed to the battlefield and preparation for the upcoming siege intensified, normal activities in the imperial palace also continued but not without its dramas. The Harem saw Mara, Bahar Gulsah, and other women busy with the preparations of the Great Campaign. However, there was still some tension because a new life was on the way.
Gulsah, who was heavily pregnant, was almost due. The question about the sex of the child that was becoming clear, whether it was a girl or a boy – was rather interesting. That birth besides the ordinary was of a plot, a birth that could change the Harem’s power relations and the outside world. How would such a development affect the situations existing in the court?

Byzantium on the doorsteps of disintegration. As the Ottomans gathered their strength, fear spread across Constantinople. The Byzantine civilization that used to be the center of all power was now on the brink of its disintegration.
Plethon had to be tough because he understood that only Notaras could ease the situation. But would Constantinus follow the counsel and summon Notaras back? Even were he, would Notaras be in a position to come back with things having gone this bad for the empire? The consequences of this action could alter the subsequent course of Byzantium.
To Die In Victory: The Last Days Of The Siege Of Constantinople, With everything else falling into place, the siege of Constantinople became not only a military exercise but also a test of cunning, loyalty, and tactfulness. Mehmed had certainly plotted a scheme that would use not only the obvious military strength but also psychological manipulation and complex interpersonal relationships.
